Shed Hunting Tips and Tactics
Shed hunting can be as serious, or as leisurely, as you want it to be. But those hoping to stack white gold can level up their game with key shed hunting tips and tactics. Certain methods improve the odds of finding cast antlers.
“Cover ground,” Karcher said. “Walk a lot of edges of fields, timber lines, and fence lines. You’ll likely have opportunities to find some sheds, and every one of those is a prize to some extent. Everybody wants to find the biggest and best sheds, but it's the smaller ones that are usually the toughest ones to find. So, enjoy being outside. Take in the nice weather. And have a fun time being outdoors during the Shed Rally this year.”
To maximize your shed collection, check areas deer frequent in late winter and early spring. Places to search include grain food sources, green food sources, areas with heavy concentrations of woody browse, field edges, bedding areas, south-facing slopes (solar bedding), dense stands of conifers (thermal bedding), and more. Don’t forget funnels, such as creek crossings, or obstacles, such as where deer jump fences. Walk all trails between bedding areas, food sources, and water sources.
Shed hunters can elevate their shed hunting by using optics. Glass in open fields and through open timber. Study distant objects that appear to be potential sheds.
While in the field, use a systematic, grid-like pattern. Move slow and spend more time looking close than far. Consider shed hunting on cloudy, overcast days to more easily spot antlers. Of course, spend the bulk of your time in areas with the most and freshest deer activity and signs.
“The biggest piece of advice I have for someone new is to not overthink it,” Karcher said. “Just get out there and enjoy the outdoors.”
