Description
This region is known for excellent glacial lakes, fishing, wild and wooly hills, and stunning valley views, and the Den is no exception! Historical Hillhead is 8 miles north of Lake City on South Dakota Highway 25. Turning east onto 107th St, the mature trees around the old town give way to grasslands and eventually to breathtaking views of the valley to the northeast. We traveled 2 miles until we reached 443rd Ave. We turned south, and the warning “Minimum Maintenance: Travel at Your Own Risk” greeted us with bold black letters on a yellow sign. These signs are common throughout our territory in northeastern South Dakota. Still, this road had excellent gravel relative to other minimum maintenance roads, and an electrical power line was strung on poles in the eastern ditch.
The Den lay three-fourths of a mile down the road and was hidden by a shelterbelt wrapped around the entire perimeter. The driveway into the property led us past a glittering pond with a hen Blue-winged Teal and her ducklings. We continued up the drive to a mature grove of old Cottonwood trees and a cozy cabin sheathed in corrugated steel. Several Whitetail Deer trails branched off through the grass, and we found many beds near the dugout along the western property boundary. Buck antlers freshly rubbed the young Willow trees ringing the dugout pond, and a doe and her fawn sprang out of the brush and headed northwest toward the mature pines.
